Whether you're laying new flooring or your furniture feels wobbly and unstable, it's important to check if your floor is level. The most accurate way to do this is with a laser level—these tools are specifically designed for this task, but in a pinch (if you don't have carpet), you can use a round object to see where the floor is tilted. Read on to learn how to tell if a floor is level.
How to Tell If a Floor Is Level You Should Know
About the Machine
Before using a suitable machine to inspect a floor, it's necessary to check that the machine is functioning properly. For example, check the laser level for accuracy and check if the bubble tube is cracked.
Condition of the Floor
Check whether the floor is obviously dusty or cluttered, or whether there are carpets or other items on the surface. These factors can affect the measurement results.
How to Tell If a Floor Is Level
Method 1: Using a Bubble Level
1.Place a bubble level on the floor. Find a spot in the middle of the floor or against a wall. Position it horizontally, with the bubble at the top. Observe the position of the bubble in the middle (lightly trace it with a marker), then flip the level over to see if the bubble is still in the same spot.
2.Check the bubble's position and visually check if the floor is tilted. If the bubble isn't within the center line, the floor is uneven. The closer the bubble is to one side of the line, the steeper the floor's tilt.
3.Before use, check the floor for any visible cracks or bulges. Lie down on the floor and look closely to check that the bottom edge is perfectly level. Repeat this process until the bubble is centered.
Bumps in the floor can cause the level to rock back and forth. If there are any bulges, support the other side with something to center the bubble, then measure the distance from the level to the floor. Measuring the distance from one end of the level to the point where it rests will give you the length of the slope.
If you plan to level the floor, be sure to mark any dips with tape.
Divide the length of the level by the height you measured to get the slope of the floor.
If you don't have a long level, use a ruler at least 6 feet (1.8 meters) long (such as a wooden board) to check the slope.
4.Repeat the puncture process in multiple locations. This will ensure the floor is perfectly level by reading the bubble and checking for any gaps.
If your level is shorter (and lacks a support beam), check multiple locations. For example, if you are using a 4-foot (1.2-meter) level, you will need to check 2 different locations near each edge of the floor, and at least 2 locations in the middle.
Method 2: Checking with a Laser Level 360
1.Take a long wooden board and cut both ends at 90-degree angles to facilitate marking. The length should be comfortable for standing.
This method works on any floor type.
2.Place the laser level 360 in the center of the floor and turn it on. Then, using a tripod, position the laser level approximately in the center of the floor. Press the "On" button on the laser level to emit the laser beam.
Before choosing a laser level 360, choose the one that best suits your measurement environment. If possible, choose one with a 360-degree beam so you can check the levelness of the entire floor without having to move it multiple times.
Not sure how to choose? You can read our "Guide to Choosing a Laser Level 360".
3.Hold the board upright, perpendicular to the floor. Stand near a corner of the floor, with the widest side facing the laser.
4.Once the laser line appears on the board, use a pencil to mark the area where the laser beam is projecting. Before marking, make sure the board is 90 degrees perpendicular to the floor to avoid errors.
5.Mark the laser height on the wooden block around the entire room. Move the block to each corner of the room, and after each placement, mark the spot where the laser beam will hit. This will allow you to see if the laser beam will match or deviate from your initial position in other locations around the room.
Measure the offset from the initial line at each location, and mark any problematic spots.
Method 3: Using a Round Object
1. Place a round object, such as a marble or golf ball, on the floor. One of the simplest ways to check if a floor is level is to use a sphere. Prepare one or more perfectly round objects and place them on the floor. If the sphere rolls naturally in one direction and lands on a spot, there's a depression at that spot. If it doesn't stay in place, there's a bulge in the floor.
2.Test the sphere in four different locations around the room. The speed and direction of the roll will determine whether there's a bulge or depression, and how much. This is a very basic method, but it can be used on floors with a noticeable slope. If you need a more detailed inspection, a bubble level or laser level 360 will provide more accuracy.
Final Tips for Success
After reading the guide on How to Tell If a Floor Is Level, we understand that each method has its advantages: bubble levels are affordable, laser levels offer the highest accuracy, and round tools are convenient and free, but only suitable for simple flooring. For best results, proceed from simple to detailed.
Following these steps, I believe you'll be able to confidently assess floor flatness and tackle any new project with ease. If you're unfamiliar with using a laser level 360, consult reliable resources like "How to Use a Laser Level" to complete more relevant tasks.
